The last 207 Bendy bus has now left our streets for good. Nine years after their introduction by Ken Livingstone, Boris has at last removed them.
Local Councillor Colm Costello said, " As a cyclist, I for one won't miss them. Trying to pass one that was stopped at a bus stop was a nightmare and when they passed you on the road, they put the fear of God into you".
Bendy buses were also known as the free bus. TFL bosses have estimated that once they are all taken off the road, over £7m will be saved in fare evasion. Too many passengers who got on the bus at the back didn't pay, costing Londoners a fortune.
There were only 120 Bendy buses on the roads, so to lose that amount of money a year is a good enough reason on it's own to get rid of them.
There were other reasons too. In 9 years on our roads, they just burst into flames 8 times, compared to 3 times in 40 years for the route master. The collision rate for cyclists and pedestrians was double that of a normal bus.
Thanks to Boris, our streets are safer and Londoners are not being robbed to the tune of £7m a year by Bendy bus fare evaders.
